I don’t know how accurate the test is though. There are at least a few flaws that I can see with it. For starters, it claims to be prompting you with the most commonly used words in the English language. Ok, but the words are not used randomly like that. When you’re typing something, there is a context to the words and you can often infer what will be coming next, you know what to expect. That’s for typing something that you’re copying. If you’re typing something that is coming directly from your brain then you can be even further ahead of what your fingers are doing, thereby reducing the ‘preparation’ time between words and sentences. Also, people like me, who may use the computer a lot and type fairly well, don’t necessarily sit and type long chunks very often. I might type a few words here, a message to someone there, a comment on another blog in another tab, etc. People who use the computer and keyboard like this probably have less ‘fit’ fingers than people who do long, sustained periods of typing. There’s also a slight delay between when you type the last word from one set and the next set appears.

But anyway. It’s just a silly page online to play around and see how you do. Just felt analytical :)

time warp

I feel I have lost time and forgotten things that I thought were fun or cool or interesting and wanted to tell people about. It’s sort of like if you are sick and in bed for a day or two doing nothing but sleeping, but everyone else is carrying on around you. When you get up it feels like it should just be the next morning from when you went to bed or something, but it’s not, it’s a couple of days later and those days are full of experiences and events for the people who weren’t sick in bed. I have that going on from being in the hospital with Abigail. But it’s not just from Sunday to Tuesday, it’s almost from Friday evening. Saturday morning I did some things getting ready for midsummer, then the rest of the day was spent at my mum’s house having midsummer. Saturday evening, Daniel and I went out to his work’s end of year dinner. We had a bit of a sleep in and slow morning on Sunday morning, then my mum mentioned that Abigail didn’t seem to be herself, so I went to get her.. and got back on Tuesday afternoon at 1300.

I had a nice day on Saturday. I got lots of nice things and gave lots of nice things. Gayle got me a Take That CD. I got various Nems stuff, of course, including some dark chocolate ones from Kate which I haven’t had opportunity to try yet so that was good :) I got a couple of books, some other chocolates, some smelly stuff and some silicone cupcake moulds. I already have the mini ones so now I have got the normal size ones too.

On Saturday evening we went out to Lure restaurant at The Coro for Daniel’s work end-of-year thing. Considering it is a seafood restaurant that has won lots of awards, I had quite a nice time and the meal wasn’t half bad. (I don’t do seafood.) I even managed to chat a little to some of the other people. When we left, Daniel’s boss’ wife was feeling a little .. jovial after the liquid refreshments she’d enjoyed with her dinner, and pronounced that I had the best knockers she’d ever seen. Other highlights were the funky cutlery that they had, the handles were 90 degrees rotated to the business end so it looked like they were standing up on edge; and also the funky unisex toilets which had glass doors. They’re transparent until you close the lock on the door, at which point they turn opaque/frosted. Very cool effect, but you really don’t want to think about it too much while you’re in there or else you’ll start to worry that it might suddenly malfunction and leave you on display to whoever is about.

we’re home

We’re back from the hospital. Incase you didn’t know we were there, my mum posted about it on Sunday and yesterday.

I had been hoping to come home yesterday afternoon but when the endocrinologists finally arrived to talk to us they explained that they could test in one of two ways.. one was to do an overnight fluid deprivation challenge thing or else to just try taking first morning’s urine and blood at the same time. I wasn’t keen on the fluid deprivation thing because that would make Abigail really upset. So I agreed to stay last night so they could get the early urine and blood.

What a fucking disaster that was. The urine bag that they put on Abigail at about 0430 caught only about 1mL of urine, the rest of it leaking straight out into her nappy. The blood that was meant to be taken right after the urine was finally first attempted at about 8.30 or so, and failed spectacularly. They tried to get blood from the cannula that she already had, none was forthcoming. They said they’d go get a phlebotomist to come and draw blood in the usual way.

She finally arrived about 1145. She’d apparently not recieved some of the pages they sent and also got called away on an emergency or something. She poked one of Abigail’s arms and got a tiny bit of blood before it stopped flowing. Daniel and I both cuddled and consoled Abigail through the whole process. She said there wasn’t enough for all the tests they wanted. They tried again to get some from the cannula, which needed to be flushed first, which Abigail doesn’t like. None came out of there. They took the cannula out then finally which was good. Since they still needed more blood they tried the elbow of that arm, and got some more thankfully. Abigail was really upset, I was crying by now too and so was Stephanie because she could see how upset Abigail was getting. We got all the stuff together then and left, and Abigail actually wanted to get into the pram which says a lot for how much she wanted to just leave.

We’re still going with the theory of diabetes insipidus, I believe, and that’s what the tests are aimed at confirming and getting more information on. There are a couple of variations, depending on whether the dysfunction is with the pituitary gland or with the kidneys. Some of the causes are also genetic which I think they want to test for since if it is genetic it would be advisable to have Stephanie and Kristian tested as well. She’s not in any serious danger since we are aware of this and once it’s confirmed and the details figured out, we can get a treatment and management plan for her. Although diabetes insipidus is really not at all related to the more common ‘sugar’ diabetes, like that one it can be easily managed and not cause any big problems. Unfortunately, it is a lifelong thing.

She fell asleep in the car on the way home, we were going to go and see my mum but since she was asleep we just came home instead. She stayed asleep for a good while longer, I expect she was quite worn out from the bloodletting. She was really crying a lot. She’s happier now she’s awake and we’ve had a shower (they offered her a bath at the hospital but she wouldn’t get in it).
